The process of shipping our dried lavender flowers to the United States has changed with new tariffs put in place by the American government. The tariffs on Canadian goods have increased the cost of importing and exporting certain items, including lavender. These tariffs affect shipping costs, which are now higher for orders sent across the border. Customers in Canada do not need to worry as domestic rates remain unchanged. However, for US orders, the extra charge will be the full responsibility of the American customer. We want to be transparent so you understand why shipping prices may look different at checkout.
What Are US Tariffs and How Will They Impact My Order?
A tariff is a tax that a government places on imported and exported goods. US tariffs have been applied to a wide range of goods this year. Since March, the United States has placed tariffs on many items entering the country, including agricultural products. These tariffs add extra charges when goods cross the border. Our dried lavender flowers fall under these rules.
On March 4, tariffs of 25% were applied to all goods from Canada and Mexico entering the US. This immediately impacted our shipments. Later dates saw more changes, including “Liberation Day tariffs” that apply to goods from nearly 200 countries. Even small, low-value shipments are no longer exempt. As of August 29, the US ended its de minimis rule. That rule had allowed shipments valued at $800 or less to enter duty-free. Now, every order must pay duties.
For our Canadian customers, none of this applies. Tariffs only apply when products cross into the United States. We want to make it clear that your shipping rates will remain the same!
How Long Will These Tariffs Last
As of now, it’s unclear how long the current tariffs will last. Some tariffs have been paused or removed, only to be reinstated days later. For example, on May 28 the Court of International Trade ruled that President Trump had overstepped his authority. This briefly removed the “Liberation Day tariffs” on Canada and Mexico. The very next day, a federal appeals court blocked that ruling, which reinstated the tariffs.
Other tariffs have not only stayed in place but increased. On June 4, tariffs on aluminum and steel doubled from 25% to 50%. On August 1, copper tariffs were also raised to 50%. For Canada, non-CUSMA-compliant goods now face a 35% tariff, up from 25%.
These constant changes make it difficult for businesses and consumers. There is no set timeline for when tariffs on our products may be lifted. They could remain for months or years, depending on US trade policy.
What is certain, however, is that McKinley Lavender Farm will not be absorbing the additional cost of US tariffs. They are the responsibility of American consumers. If tariffs are reduced or removed, we will update our shipping costs right away. Until then, we encourage our US customers to be aware of these added charges when placing an order.
What This Means for Our Customers
If you live in the US, tariffs mean your shipping total will be higher than before. These fees are unavoidable because we are not able to ship your package without paying them. When you order dried lavender flowers from us, you are agreeing to cover the cost of shipping plus any tariffs.
We want to make it very clear that our farm does not profit from these tariffs.
For Canadian customers, nothing has changed. You will not see higher shipping costs. Tariffs do not apply to domestic orders.
If you are a US customer, we suggest ordering in larger quantities to make shipping more efficient. It may be worthwhile to combine purchases with friends or family to balance out the costs. While tariffs are frustrating, we remain committed to offering the same high-quality dried lavender flowers we have always provided.
