Why Matcha Works
Matcha is old. It’s older than you. Older than your grandma. And probably older than your grandma’s grandma. This just to say: people have been drinking it for centuries. Matcha’s origin dates all the way back to the Tang Dynasty (7th- 10th century) in China. At this time, tea leaves were formed into bricks for easy transport. When a person wanted to use the brick of leaves, they would break off a chunk and grind it into a fine powder before mixing it with hot water. This preparation is what sets the wheels in motion for the creation of matcha. Later on, during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the beverage evolved further until it’s journey to Japan. After arriving in Japan in the 12th century, matcha became the drink we know and love today.
What’s made it stick around is how it makes you feel. The energy from matcha is different from that of coffee. It doesn’t spike, and it doesn’t leave you crashing two hours later. This is thanks to a compound known as L-theanine, which helps your brain stay calm while the caffeine does its job. As a result, you feel more focused but not wired. Awake but not anxious. It’s great for work, for study, or even just for a slow morning when you want to feel energized.
Matcha is also full of antioxidants. These help your body deal with stress and inflammation. It’s one of those things that makes you feel better now and also does good stuff for you long-term.
And yeah, it has caffeine. But it’s about a third of what you’d get from a cup of coffee. That makes it a solid choice if you want a pick-me-up without going overboard. Matcha is a great choice if you’re trying to cut back on coffee or energy drinks!
Our Simple Syrup Makes the Perfect Lavender Matcha
There are a lot of lavender syrups out there, but most of them are full of preservatives, dyes, and fake flavour. We’ve discussed this extensively on our blog, but here are the CliffsNotes just in case.
Our syrup is made with lavender that’s hand-harvested from our Kelowna farm. It’s slow-grown, has no sprays, and is processed in small batches. The syrup has just three ingredients: lavender, water, and sugar. That’s it. What makes it good is that it actually tastes like lavender. Not perfume. Not candy. Just clean, light floral notes that don’t overpower the drink. When you mix it into matcha, it softens the earthy flavour without making it overly sweet.
And when you use a syrup like ours, you’re also keeping things local. You’re supporting a Canadian farm that’s working with nature, not against it. That’s something you can be proud of, even if it’s just one small change.
Homemade Lavender Matcha Recipe
If you’ve ever ordered a lavender matcha from a coffee shop, you probably noticed two things: it’s expensive, and it’s usually too sweet. The syrup they use tends to be artificial and strong. The matcha might be low quality, too. It works if you’re in a rush, but it’s not the best version of what this drink can be.
Making lavender matcha at home changes the game. You get to control how it tastes. You can choose a matcha you like. Ideally, you’ll look for one that’s smooth and bright green, not bitter or dull. You can use the milk you prefer, and you can adjust the amount of syrup until it’s just right.
The basic recipe we follow when making our lavender matcha lattes is this:
- Whisk about 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with a bit of hot water until smooth. Add your steamed milk (or pour over ice with cold milk for an iced version). Stir in 1-2 teaspoons of MKL lavender syrup, and that’s it.
It takes less than five minutes. It costs less than half what you’d pay at a coffee shop. And it actually tastes like something you’d want to drink again.
More than anything, though, it gives you some control. You’re not stuck with whatever syrup blend a chain is using that month. And, you know exactly what’s going in your cup.
